Chiyo eventually meets, Mameha, who is Hatsumomo's chief competition as a geisha. Mameha makes Chiyo her apprentice and helps her rise to become the most famous geisha in Japan. As a geisha, Chiyo becomes known as Sayuri. Shortly after Chiyo arrives at the okiya she meets the Chairman. After meeting him, Chiyo is given the motivation and purpose to become a geisha and change her destiny in the hope that it will bring her closer to him.
